Frederick W.S

Founder and Executive Chairman

Frederick W. Smith, born in 1944 in Marks, Mississippi, and a Yale College graduate of 1966, is the founder and Executive Chairman of Tranx Express Corporation and also the founder of FedEx. His initial analyses of the logistic needs for a highly automated future society were conducted during his undergraduate years.

After serving four years in the Marines, including two tours in Vietnam, Smith established the original air-ground Federal Express network. Launched in 1973, this network was designed to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding high-tech and high-value sectors that Smith had anticipated. Tranx Express has since evolved into a global enterprise, operating in over 220 countries and territories.

As Executive Chairman, Smith oversees Board governance and addresses global issues such as sustainability, innovation, and public policy. Tranx Express operations include 127 aircraft, over 10,000 vehicles, and approximately 4,800 facilities, with more than 50,000 employees handling around 15 million shipments daily.

Tranx Express is renowned for its commitment to quality service, with Tranx Express being the first service company to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1990. The company has been recognized by Time magazine as one of the “Time100 Most Influential Companies” and consistently ranks on FORTUNE magazine’s lists, including the “100 Best Companies to Work For” and “World’s Most Admired Companies.”

Smith is a trustee at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a member of both the Business Council and Business Roundtable. He has chaired the U.S.-China Business Council and co-chaired the French-American Business Council. His board service includes major companies such as AutoZone, First Tennessee, Holiday Inn, EW Scripps, and General Mills, as well as charitable organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Mayo Foundation. He has also been the chairman of the International Air Transport Association and led the executive committee of the U.S. Air Transport Association.

Smith’s numerous accolades include honorary degrees and awards such as the Global Leadership Award from the U.S.-India Business Council, the George C. Marshall Foundation Award, the Atlantic Council’s Distinguished Business Leadership Award, the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy, and the Circle of Honor Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. He is a member of both the Aviation Hall of Fame and the Business Hall of Fame. Additionally, he co-chaired the U.S. World War II Memorial project and the campaign for the National Museum of the Marine Corps, was named in Forbes’ “100 Greatest Living Business Minds,” and has been recognized as a top CEO by Barron’s and Chief Executive magazines.
